Diamond to Shine (and More …)

by Chuck Hinson on May 3rd, 2008

Okay, I’ll admit it: Despite my deep rock roots, I can never get enough of the stylistic smoothness of Neil Diamond! I mean, from his days as a Brill Building songwriter to his superstardom as America’s most prolific troubador, the man has won the hearts and musical souls of millions.

We’ve grooved to the belting rock of Cherry, Cherry, heard every lonely person’s cry in I Am … I Said, witnessed the creation of the world in the African trilogy Soolaimon, got that “tent-revival” religion in Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show … and so much more (and, hey — I didn’t even include the duets!).

And, now, he’s scheduled to kick off a 37-city North American tour (meaning: “heads-up,” Canadian Rockaholics!) on July 19th in St. Paul, Minnesota! (and this, after a hefty European tour! For BritFans, he’ll be playin’ the O2 and Wembley arenas!) For ticket info, check out his site … and don’t miss the chance to see this superstar on this tour of a lifetime! It’s in conjunction with the release of his upcoming CD, Home Before Dark.

NOW … IN OTHER NEWS:

Sylvester Stewart (aka “Sly Stone”) cancelled a Chi-Town appearance (it was supposed to have been on Saturday). He said it was for, ummmm, “health reasons.” No plans to re-sched, either …

The Guess Who’s Carl Dixon, who took over lead vocals after Burton Cummings left, was involved in a head-on auto crash a coupla weeks ago in Melbourne, Australia. He was trapped in the wreckage for two hours and placed in an induced coma, but his condition’s improved. Still, he’s hospitalized with two broken legs, a broken right hand and a badly injured eye that, according to docs, he’ll probably lose. Dude, the Rockaholics are all pullin’ for ya!

A lotta rock talk goin’ on about Elvis and a supposed “visit” he made to England. According to sources, he took a leave while in the Army (stationed in Germany) to meet and be shown around London by Tommy Steele.
But, now, two of the infamous Memphis Mafia said they were with Elvis at the time, and he was confined to base in Germany! In other words (according to them), it never happened! More on this little fraca as it develops …

RON RYAN and THINKIN’ ABOUT YOU

Y’know, if anybody deserves a spot in the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame for his songwriting and musical history, it’d haveta be the man who, for all intents and purposes, put the Dave Clark Five on the musical map! (If you just joined us, check out Ron’s site at Ron Ryan Music for the shocking, true story.)
But his writing talent didn’t end there! Ron’s still writing some spectacular numbers, such as this one:

COMING UP: THE FORE AND MORE! But, for now (and since The Relic’s a bit down with a stomach bug), I’m gonna turn it in for about six hours. So, until this time tomorrow, remember:

Keep your eyes on the skies, your feet on the ground, your heart with the music … and I’ll see ya on the flip side>
