Dylan In Court (and more …)

by Chuck Hinson on July 2nd, 2008

Who sez this music of ours doesn’t have impact??
I mean, even the Supreme Cat used a famous line from …
(ummm, wait. That’s supposed to read “Supreme Court”! Uh — heh-heh!s-sorry …) from one of Dylan’s (come to think about it, I’d rather deal with Garfield!) biggest hits to drive home a point about payphone (do they still make those?) carriers and L-D ops. Matter of fact, he used my favorite Dylan line: “When ya ain’t got nothin’ ya got nothin’ to lose!” *lyric from Like A Rolling Stone by Bob Dylan.
Now, it isn’t the first time the SLE (Supreme Legal Eagles) of government have used his lyrics. In fact, they’ve used … let’s seeee here: 26 of Dylan’s, 12 of Paul Simon’s, five of Springsteen’s, four by Mick Jagger & Keith Richards, three of Lennon and/or McCartney, two from the Grateful Dead and one by Joni Mitchell.

Notice they didn’t use any new or super old stuff: They referred to Sixties’ hits, yardbirds! It’s, what? Forty-plus years later, and it’s still makin’ an impact?? Impressive, huh?

LONG TALL SALLY GOT MARRIED??

Dunno. But it’s a boss way of lettin’ ya know that Little Richard (make that Reverend L. R.) presided over a wedding a coupla days ago … on the US TV soaper, The Young and The Restless. He hooked together two of the characters in wedlock! (Knowin’ the soaps like I don’t, the next scene was probably in the motel room, where she yells, “I hear ya knockin’ but ya can’t come in!” He breaks in [oh, so tenderly] and they start to “Rip It Up”. Natch, she’s wearin’ her “Ready Teddy”.)

Ummm, since I’m, er, still unattached, uh, I think I’d better stop now and, er, get on to … ummm, other things …

The Crickets are now in the Musician’s Hall of Fame! Yup … word came out today from Nashville that Buddy’s old group, plus Al Kooper, Booker T. and The MGs and the famous Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section are gonna be properly inducted in October!

FAB FORE FAN FEST FUN

This afternoon, the lads took to the webwaves and chatted with their fans live and unedited. Natch, The Relic was there to take in all the verbal interaction, and, Rockiteers, the band is as witty, intelligent and thoughtful as they are fab musically!
We had more fun (example: When Spencer [bassist] said a recording contract is “just around the corner” [and, yardbirds, it is!], Si [drummer] left the chat and ran around the corner to find it! Eager lad … just hang on, Si. It’s coming!), and Spencer answered a number of questions posed by fans, including you Rockiteers (via RelicMail)..

One question that was asked recently was
“What is the difference between Merseybeat and the London Beat?”
Here’s what Spencer told us in reply:
“Good question … Mersey had all the extra songs from the States being a port. Rhythm and blues had its home in London. Mersey could never come up with the sounds from London. The only exceptions were DC5 really. And of course you had Mancbeat (the Manchester beat) as well …”
I’ll be includin’ more in the next ish, so don’t miss it!!

LIVERPOOL MEETS HAMBURG

In this vid (well, song. Unless ya like watchin’ a 45 go roundandroundandround until yer dizzy!), you’re gonna hear the “A” and “B” sides of a 1963 release by Liverpool’s The Fourmost — a legendary band that didn’t quite make the Invasion list, but kicked some serious hiney with their fantastic sound!
Here, they do I’m In Love (a song written by Lennon & McCartney), which is very appropriate for young luvvers, and Respectable (a cover of the Isley Brothers’ hit), which is very “Hamburg” style!
So, in two of my very faves, back-to-back, here’s I’m In Love (which I ain’t) and Respectable (which I hope I am!. Enjoy:

Awright, troops … that’s gonna be it for this episode … but stay tuned; another one’s gonna follow in about … 12 hours or so, more or less, give or take, somewhat. Just keep yer dial right here and I’ll be back with more in just a few.
Until then, though, remember:

Keep your nose in the wind, your eyes on the skies, your heart with the music … and I’ll see ya on the flip side!
