The Rock Relic

Eagles Nixed; Jones Wigged; others

by Chuck Hinson on December 3rd, 2007

Well, even the best laid eggs … er, plans … sometimes screw up:
While the suits in charge of Super Bowl XLII (that’s either 42 or 1,453.  I forget …) wanted to get The Eagles for their halftime fun, they hadta settle for Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers.  Now, nobody’s talkin’ about why the birds won’t fly for the show, but The RelicLine is speculating that it’s a mix of their desire to exit once the new CD’s played out and the fact that these guys just don’t get along offstage!  But Tom & Crew are gonna be dynamite (look for R O C K in the USA to be played somewhere in their set.  That’ll ignite the crowd!!).  The decision was made Sunday, btw.

Speakin’ of “Toms” (or, The Times, They Are A-Changin’):  Mr. — er, Sir — Tom Jones was playin’ a casino in California on Friday and, as always, struttin’ his stuff like he did 40 years ago (this cat never ages much …) when one of his overexcited female fans threw her … her wig … onstage! (Huh?? I dunno … maybe she couldn’t get her pantyhose off before the song ended)  Anyway, the Welsh Wailer picked up the wig and, without missing a beat, went into the T-Bone Walker classic, You Can Keep Your Hat On.  Face it … like him or not, Sir Cat is all-pro!  And lemme add: a true gentleman!

A quick word before today’s surprise finale: Brian Wilson, Diana Ross and Steve Martin were among those honored with the 2007 Kennedy Center Honors on Sunday.  The event will be broadcast on CBS on December 26.  Also, Martin Scorsese and pianist Leon Fleischer will be recipients.

Now … for all you who’ve wondered:  John (Cougar) Mellencamp told his Erie, Pennsylvania audience that he’s gotten word he’ll be one of this year’s inductees into the Rock-and-Roll Hall of Fame.  No problem — I’m sure Jack and Diane are very happy — but it brought up an interesting piece of 411:  Jann Wenner (also publisher of Rolling Stone Magazine) and head of the nominating committee, has been accused of rigging the selection process and inducting his own favorites!  Though the voting process is supposed to be continuing at the moment, ya gotta wonder if they’ve already been counted, or if Mellencamp is just one of Wenner’s favorite performers.  Stay tuned for more on this one …

Okay, that’s it for this edition.   Until next time, remember to keep your eyes on the skies, your feet on the ground, your heart with the music … and I’ll see ya on the flip side!
