QUIZ-TIME (”Names”) Answers …
Hey … remember that li’l ol’ name quiz I ran earlier this week? Well, here it is again, with the answers I promised (and a bit of background):
Formerly a California group called the Crossfires, they changed their name in honor of The Byrds. This was the Voylan/Kaplan quintet, The Turtles! Originally, they spelled it with a ‘y’, but most thought it was too ‘Byrd-ish’ so they took to the normal spelling (wait … Howard? Mark? NORMAL?? Umm, have ya seen their shows?)
The name of this popular act came from their manager, Jonathan King, who dreamed he managed a band of that name, and, in the dream, it had the top LP and single in America. Answer: 10cc! (note: It was not named for the … er, ‘other’ reason, as so many rockers think!)
While trying to decide on a name for their act, this trio almost called themselves The Frozen Noses in reference to their cocaine habit. This was the trio/occasional quartet/once-quintet now back-to-trio (sometimes, maybe with Neil), Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young-sometimes and Taylor-early-on.
They got their name from Paul McCartney’s early stage moniker. In fact, all the members adopted the band’s new name as their last names. This one was CBGB’s favorite sons, The Ramones. Some have said the Blitzkrieg Boppers coulda been bigger than they were, had they broken their connection with the now-defunct club! Dunno …
While this band was rushing to think up a name before their first gig, a member’s older brother became frustrated and yelled at them to call themselves this name. Yep … the older bro got a bit flustered and blurted, “Well, why don’tcha just call yerselves ‘RUSH’?” The name (thankfully) stuck …
The manager of this legendary group wanted a name change and came up with the Pedigree name of a friend’s cat. In Latin, it means ‘beyond these things’. The band mis-heard the name and spelled it differently. The Paramounts (who did a lot of Coasters covers, most notably Poison Ivy) heard the words (and the cat’s name) Procul Harun. Any idea what they named themselves??
Now … I’ve mentioned this one before (betcha got the name on the first try on this one), but I had it here because The Fore’s Luke Bentley’s a fan of the band:
They were named after a Robert E. Lee High School gym coach named Leonard Skinner, who punished two of the founding members for breaking the school code and wearing long hair and sideburns below the ears. Geee … lemme think here … ummm, replace the vowels with “y’s”, delete an “n” and add a “d” at the end, and ya got … Lynyrd Skynyrd?
Didja get ‘em?? GREAT!! Now … lemme try this quizzer for ya:
NAME THE PERSON WHO SAID THESE:
‘The thing the sixties did was to show us the possibilities and the responsibility that we all had. It wasn’t the answer. It just gave us a glimpse of the possibility.’
‘You can’t cheat kids. If you cheat them when they’re children they’ll make you pay when they’re sixteen or seventeen by revolting against you or hating you or all those so-called teenage problems. I think that’s finally when they’re old enough to stand up to you and say, ‘What a hypocrite you’ve been all this time. You’ve never given me what I really wanted, which is you.’
IN THE FORE-FRONT THIS WEEK … (A REMINDER)
If you’re one of the many Rockaholics in the UK, remember to rock the Cavern Club in Liverpool on May 4 (this coming Sunday!!) … and for a good cause! Like I said earlier: not only will The Fore be rockin’ the fans into a frenzy with their fab sounds, but the gig is in aid of The Yoko Ono Children’s Hospital ‘Imagine Fund’! C’mon … it’s only £2! For all the great music, friends and helping youngsters, it’s a fabulous price!
And look for a special video two-fer comin’ up on Monday … but, until then, more updatez from the FOREFRONT comin’ up in the next posts!
WE’LL HAVE MORE UPDATES ON SUPERSTAR PETE DINTINO just as soon as his angel-daughter, Lin, posts them on the CaringBridge site! And, coming up, more from the legendary songmeister, Ron Ryan … as well as news, views and MORE! So stay tuned …
Until tomorrow, same time, same station … keep your eyes on the skies, your feet on the ground, your heart with the music (and thoughts/prayers with Pete!) … and I’ll see ya on the flip side.
